1. Have a ready-to-wear suit altered

Most men that buy suits don’t have them altered, but for $50-$100 you can make the suit look twice as good and twice as expensive. Always put that money aside in your budget when buying from someone other than The Mans Shop. Make sure the neck and shoulders fit well when you try it on; don’t worry about the waist (trousers or jacket) or length of sleeves or legs. The Mans Shop team will take care of that.

Button your jacket

There’s no point having a suit that fits if you don’t button it up. When you’re standing, it should be buttoned. Always the waist button (top on a two-button suit, middle on a three-button), never the bottom button and only the top if it’s a three-button suit with no roll. As Wilkes Bashford explained it: remember ‘sometimes, always, never’ when looking down a three-button jacket.

Made to measure and bespoke is worth the money you may find that a ready-to-wear suit costs around $700, made to measure is $900 and bespoke over $1400. Each one is worth that money in terms of how it will fit, aside from questions of quality or longevity. Some body shapes get more out of MTM or bespoke, given their lack of average proportions, but I maintain that it is worth the money for anyone. Spend your money on these levels of fit rather than on bigger labels.

Spend money on shoes

Whenever you see someone in a nice suit, the next thing you do is look down.

And their shoes nearly always disappoint. Spend at least half the money you’re spending on your suit on a good pair of shoes. A bespoke suit deserves Allen Edmonds.

Have some color, somewhere

If you don’t like ties, that’s fine. But for goodness sake find a way to wear some color somewhere else. A pocket handkerchief is great with no tie.

This is how to do it correctly

When you have an occasion to wear a suit how do you decide to go sans tie or not? It depends on how you feel that day. Do you want to be sharp formal or sharp casual. A tie can make a difference on how you feel when looking in the mirror and how people interrupt you that day. Just because you have on a tie does not mean stuffy old school. Pick one with color and attitude or a fabric not silk or go crazy and try a bow tie. If you choose to not wear a tie pick up a pair of workin stiffs and turn your fly away collars into a crisp solid collar stance. It makes all the difference between a polished look and a rumpled offering. Warning: once you get started on them you will criticize anyone you see that has a rumpled collar. One way to class up your tie-less suit is a spot of color coming from your breast pocket. Although silk is the prominent fabric of choice the pocket square is not limited to just that. Try a linen fabric and get a new look from a staple idea. The pocket square adds just enough pop when you choose to go sans tie with your suit. Your suit needs to fit without acres of extra cloth flapping about. This also goes for any sports coat or blazer even if you wear them over jeans. The rest is all about the way you carry yourself.
